Right from the start we at Peasantry Press have decided that writing and publishing should be accessible to all - Not just the select few who happen to fall into the right circles at the right time. With the Kids Can Write initiative we work with schools and students to publish student writing in various formats.
WHAT IS IT?
We all know that children have some pretty incredible imaginations and can come up with some rather interesting story lines. We want to reward those students by helping them bring their books to life. We have worked with individual students to create limited print-runs of their books to share with family and friends, and have worked with schools to create writing anthologies for classes so that students can have their writing published in a physical book that they can cherish for many years.
HOW IT WORKS
When we take on a "Kids Can Write" project we work with the involved school, or the parents or guardians of a child and provide editing support, formatting support, and design support so that we can bring the project to print completely at cost.
WHY DO WE DO IT?
We feel it is important to inspire the younger generations to write - and to write a lot. When kids write a story they are often brushed off, ignored, or barely acknowledged. When a young writer finishes a large piece of writing this should be rewarded! We have seen the result of a student receiving a physical book that they have written - and it not only inspires them to write more, but also inspires their friends and peers to try to write something. In a world of 140 characters or less, the accomplishment of writing an entire book, or putting together an entire anthology is something we want to celebrate.
HOW WE SELECT PROJECTS
While we wish we could work on every project, we do not have the staff or time resources available to be able to provide this at-cost venture to unlimited authors. Currently we are hand-selecting projects as they come to us - but we are working towards being able to work with more schools and more students.
